Most people do not like to eat Long Beans but that maybe because they have never prepared it like this. We are making a tasty Long Beans Curry that will make you fall in love with Long Beans which you can eat every day. This Long Beans Curry Recipe is simple and easy to prepare and it is made the traditional way that our ancestors used to make.

Although Long Beans and Green Beans (or String Beans) are two different types of legumes, you can cook them the same way. Long Beans are often called String Beans or Yardlong beans (in Sinhala, it is called Mekaral or Makaral).

Ingredients

For the Long Beans Curry

  • 250g of Log Beans
  • 10 Jackfruit Seeds
  • 3 Cloves of Garlic
  • 1 thinly sliced Onion
  • Some Curry Leaves
  • Some Fenugreek Seeds
  • 1 tsp of both Roasted Curry Powder
  • 1 tsp of Raw Curry Powder
  • Some Pepper
  • 1 tbsp of Chili Powder
  • Some Turmeric Powder
  • Piece of Goraka
  • Coconut Milk

For the Tempered Mixture

  • 3 crushed Garlic Cloves
  • 3 dried Chilies broken by hand into smaller pieces
  • Half an Onion chopped
  • Some Mustard Seeds
  • Some Curry Leaves
  • Some Chili Powder

Instructions

  1. Break Long Beans into smaller pieces by hand.
  2. Remove the peels from some Jackfruit Seeds.
  3. Wash the Jackfruit Seeds and add to a pot.
  4. Add the Long Beans.
  5. Add 3 Garlic Cloves.
  6. Add a thinly sliced Onion.
  7. Add some Curry Leaves.
  8. Add some Fenugreek Seeds.
  9. Add 1 tsp Roasted Curry Powder.
  10. Add 1 tsp of Raw Curry Powder.
  11. Add some Pepper.
  12. Add 1 tbsp of Chili Powder.
  13. Add some Turmeric Powder.
  14. Add a piece of Goraka.
  15. Add Coconut Milk until it covers everything
  16. Cook over medium heat.
  17. While the Curry is cooking, heat some Oil in a saucepan.
  18. Add 3 dried Chilies broken by hand into smaller pieces.
  19. Add half an Onion chopped.
  20. Add some Mustard Seeds.
  21. Stir this tempered mixture together.
  22. Add some Curry Leaves and let this mixture temper for a while.
  23. Turn off the stove and add some Chili Powder.
  24. Now add this tempered mixture to the Long Beans Curry which should be still cooking over medium heat.
  25. Add some Water to the saucepan used for the tempered mixture so you can collect any residual ingredients and then add it into the Long Beans Curry.
