Easy Nasi Goreng with a homemade Shrimp Paste

One of the main dishes of Indonesia, Nasi Goreng has become quite popular in Sri Lanka and other Southeast Asia countries. In this recipe, we prepare the shrimp paste from scratch in a very simple way.

Try this tasty Nasi Goreng with our homemade Ambarella Chutney or 2 types of Chili Paste.

Ingredients

For the Chicken Marinade

  • 300g of Boneless Chicken
  • 2 tbsp of Soy Sauce
  • 1 tsp of Pepper
  • Salt

For the Meat Sauce

  • Half an Onion
  • 2 ripened Chilies
  • Some Garlic and some Ginger blended into a paste
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 medium sized Carrots
  • 2 Banana Peppers
  • Some thinly sliced Cabbage
  • 250g of Cooked Rice (Samba or Basmati)
  • Salt
  • 3 tbsp of Sweetened Soy Sauce
  • Some sliced Spring Onions

For the Shrimp Paste

  • 3 ripened Chilies
  • 2 Onions
  • 3 dried Chilies
  • 6 to 7 Garlic Cloves
  • 50g of Shrimp
  • 1 tsp of Pepper
  • 1 tbsp Chili Paste
  • 1 tbsp of Sugar

Instructions

Prepare the Chicken Marinade

  1. Add 300g of Boneless Chicken to a bowl.
  2. Add 2 tbsp of Soy Sauce.
  3. Add 1 tsp of Pepper.
  4. Add Salt to taste.
  5. Mix everything by hand and set it aside for 15 minutes to marinade.

Prepare the Shrimp Paste

  1. Heat up some Oil in a saucepan.
  2. Break 3 ripened Chilies into smaller pieces and add it
  3. Add 2 diced Onions.
  4. Add 3 dried Chilies.
  5. Add 6 to 7 Garlic Cloves.
  6. Lightly sautee everything together.
  7. Now add 50g of Shrimp that has been dried and blended into a powder.
  8. Add 1 tsp of Pepper.
  9. Add 1 tbsp Chili Paste.
  10. Mix everything and then let the mixture cool down a bit.
  11. Now blend the mixture into a paste.
  12. Add 1 tbsp of Sugar and stir the mixture.

For the White Sauce

  1. Heat up 3 tbsp of Butter in a saucepan.
  2. Add 3 tbsp of All Purpose Flour.
  3. Stir everything together thoroughly.
  4. Add 2 cups of Milk.
  5. Add 1 tsp of Pepper.
  6. Add some Oregano.
  7. Add some Salt.
  8. Stir everything together thoroughly under medium heat.
  9. Now add Mozzarella or Parmesan Cheese (you can add either or even both).
  10. Cook until it is slightly thickened.

Final Steps

  1. Heat up some Oil in a saucepan.
  2. Add half a chopped Onion.
  3. Add 2 ripened thinly sliced Chilies.
  4. Add some Garlic and some Ginger blended into a paste.
  5. Stir everything together under medium heat.
  6. Now add the marinaded Chicken.
  7. Stir frequently and wait till the Chicken has cooked for a little bit.
  8. Now add the Shrimp Paste.
  9. Break 1 Egg and add it.
  10. Now add 2 diced Carrots.
  11. Add 2 sliced Banana Peppers.
  12. Add some shredded Cabbage.
  13. Add Salt to taste.
  14. Cook for a little bit until the Carrots are cooked through and soft.
  15. Add 250g of Cooked Rice (Samba or Basmati) and stir everything together under medium heat.
  16. Now add 3 tbsp of sweet Soy Sauce.
  17. Add some sliced Spring Onions and stir everything together.
