How to make Sri Lankan Fish Buns at home

These soft Sri Lankan Fish Buns are perfect for afternoon teatime and they have a generous amount of filling when compared to the bakery ones because it is homemade.

This recipe yields about 12 Sri Lankan Fish Buns using only 500g of Flour so you can save money by making it at home.

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 500g of All Purpose Flour
  • 1 and a half tsp of Yeast
  • 3 tbsp of Sugar
  • Salt
  • 1 Egg
  • Half a cup of Milk
  • 1 tbsp of Butter

For the Filling

  • 3 crushed Garlic Cloves
  • 2 sliced Chilies
  • 2 chopped Onions
  • Some Curry Leaves
  • Some crushed Cardamom and Cloves
  • Crushed piece of Cinnamon
  • Salt
  • 1 tsp of Pepper
  • 1 tbsp of Chili Flakes
  • 200g Paraw Fish (or any Fish you want)
  • 3 boiled Potatoes that are mashed

Instructions

For the Dough

  1. Add 500g of All Purpose Flour to a bowl.
  2. Add 1 and a half tsp of Yeast.
  3. Add 3 tbsp of Sugar.
  4. Add some Salt.
  5. Break open 1 Egg and add it.
  6. Add half a cup of Milk.
  7. Mix by hand thoroughly.
  8. After mixing the ingredients, add Water slowly and form the dough.
  9. You will need to knead the dough until it is soft.
  10. After kneading, rub some Cooking Oil around the dough and set it aside covered for about 30 minutes for the dough to rise.
  11. You can rub some Cooking Oil on the inside of the bowl so that the dough doesn't stick to the bowl.

For the Filling

  1. Heat some Oil in a saucepan.
  2. Add a little bit of chopped Onions.
  3. Add 3 crushed Garlic Cloves.
  4. Add 3 sliced Chilies.
  5. Add 2 chopped Onions.
  6. Add some Curry Leaves.
  7. Stir frequently under medium heat.
  8. Add some crushed Cardamom and Cloves.
  9. Add a crushed piece of Cinnamon.
  10. Add Salt to taste.
  11. Add 1 tsp of Pepper.
  12. Add 1 tbsp of Chili Flakes.
  13. Add 200g of Paraw Fish (or any fish you like).
  14. Add 3 boiled Potatoes that are mashed first.

Final Steps

  1. Once the dough has risen, press down on it and remove any air bubbles.
  2. Now break the dough into smaller pieces.
  3. Now take each dough piece and flatten it thin but not too thin.
  4. Scoop some of the filling we made and place it in the middle and flatten it a bit.
  5. Fold the dough piece into a triangular shape making sure to seal the edges.
  6. Add a parchment paper to the baking tray.
  7. Place each of the Fish Buns on the baking tray making sure that they have enough space in between.
  8. Now cover the baking tray and set it aside for about 10 minutes.
  9. Then rub some Egg Yolk on top of each Fish Bun.
  10. Now it is ready to bake. Preheat the Oven to 180 celsius and bake for about 20 to 30 minutes.
