2 ways of making Gal Musket in the Oven and on the Stove Top

Gal Musket is a traditional sweet which has a top and bottom crust with a soft and moist middle containing a tasty filling made from Coconut Milk, Dates, and Sugar. This recipe only requires 5 ingredients and it is quick to make. We show you how to make it both in the Oven and on the stove top.

This recipe will make about 1.5 KG of Gal Musket. This sweet is also spelled as Gal Muscat and Gal Muskat.

Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 500ml of Thick Coconut Milk
  • Salt
  • 1 tsp of Vanilla Extract
  • 750g of Sugar
  • 500g of Dates
  • 500g of All Purpose Flour

Instructions

For the Gal Musket

  1. Remove the pits from 500g of Dates.
  2. Chop the Dates into small pieces.
  3. Add 500ml of thick Coconut Milk into a bowl.
  4. Add Salt to taste.
  5. Add 1 tsp of Vanilla Extract.
  6. Heat a saucepan over medium heat.
  7. Add 1 tbsp of the 750g of Sugar.
  8. When the Sugar starts to brown, add a small amount of Water.
  9. Now add the remaining Sugar.
  10. Stir frequently until all of the Sugar has melted.
  11. Pour the Coconut Milk mixture into the saucepan.
  12. Stir frequently for about 2 to 3 minutes.
  13. Add the chopped Dates.
  14. Stir frequently for 2 to 3 minutes and then turn off the stove.
  15. Add 500g of All Purpose Flour into a bowl.
  16. Pour the Coconut Date mixture into the bowl, a little at a time, while mixing thoroughly and forming a thick mixture until there is a heavy feel to the spoon.

Baking it in the Oven

  1. Rub some Coconut Oil on the inside of a baking tray.
  2. Cover the baking tray with parchment paper.
  3. Rub some Coconut Oil on the parchment paper.
  4. Pour the Gal Musket mixture into the baking tray and spread evenly.
  5. Preheat the Oven to 180 Celsius.
  6. Place the baking tray in the oven and bake for about 30 to 35 minutes.
  7. After baking, remove the parchment paper and then cut the Gal Musket into squares.

Making it on the Stove Top

  1. Rub some Coconut Oil on the inside of a baking pan.
  2. Cover the baking pan with parchment paper.
  3. Rub some Coconut Oil on the parchment paper.
  4. Pour the Gal Musket mixture into the baking pan and spread evenly.
  5. Place a large pot on the stove.
  6. Place a metal cooking stand inside the pot.
  7. Place the baking pan on top of the stand inside the pot.
  8. Cover the pot and cook over medium heat for about 40 minutes.
  9. After cooking, remove the parchment paper and then cut the Gal Musket into squares.
