Kerala style Fried Tea Cake Recipe without Baking
Fried Tea Cakes are a popular teatime sweet that is served in teashops in Kerala, India. These Tea Cakes do not require many ingredients or take much time to make. This Tea Cake is also known as Vettu Cake or Tea Kadai.
When frying these Tea Cakes, it is important to use the lowest heat otherwise the inside will still be raw while the outside is cooked.

Ingredients
- 125g of Powdered Sugar
- 250g of All Purpose Flour
- 2 tsp of Semolina Flour
- 1 Egg (optional)
- Crushed Cardamom or Vanilla Extract
- 1 tbsp of Oil or Ghee
- Turmeric Powder
- Salt
- 1 tbsp of Rice Flour (if you are not adding 1 Egg)
Instructions
- Add 125g of Powdered Sugar into a bowl.
- Add 2 tsp of Semolina Flour. Important: Make sure it is not toasted.
- Add 1 Egg (optional).
- Stir everything together thoroughly until all the Sugar has been incorporated.
- After about mixing for 3 to 4 minutes, add some crushed Cardamom or some Vanilla Extract.
- Add 1 tbsp of Oil or Ghee.
- Add some Turmeric Powder.
- Add Salt to taste.
- Mix everything together thoroughly.
- Add 125g of the All Purpose Flour.
- Mix thoroughly.
- Add 1/2 a tsp of Baking Soda.
- Mix and form a dough.
- Add the remaining 125g of All Purpose Flour.
- Mix and form a soft dough.
- Now cover the bowl with the dough and set it aside for 30 minutes.
- After letting the dough rest, break the dough into smaller dough balls.
- Place each dough ball in your palm and use a spoon to make 2 incisions, one horizontally and one vertically.
- Deep fry each of the Tea Cakes over low heat until it is a golden color.
