Godapara is a traditional sweetmeat (rasa kawili) that contains a moist filling made from Pittu and an outer shell made with Rice Flour. This sweetmeat is made for New Years in villages in Sri Lanka but most people today do not know about it. It looks like Narang Kawum but the filling and how it is prepared for the Godapara is different because it is made with Pittu. This filling is the same as you would use for making Wali Thalapa. This recipe will yield about 30 Godapara.

Total Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 250g of Pittu (should be prepared with a handful of grated Coconut)
  • 200g of Sugar
  • Cumin Seeds
  • Coconut Milk from 1 grated Coconut
  • 150g of Rice Flour
  • Salt
  • Turmeric Powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare 250g of Pittu and set it aside for now. Important: When you prepare the Pittu, be sure to add a handful of grated Coconut.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp of the 200g of Sugar in a saucepan over medium heat.
  3. When the Sugar starts to caramelize, add 1 cup of Water.
  4. Now add the remaining Sugar.
  5. Stir frequently until this mixture is thick and bubbling.
  6. Now add the Pittu we prepared earlier.
  7. Add some Cumin Seeds.
  8. Stir frequently over medium heat.
  9. When the spoon feels heavy to stir and the filling is starting to stick to the bottom of the pan, take it off the stove.
  10. Now add the Coconut Milk from 1 grated Coconut into a bowl.
  11. Add 150g of Rice Flour.
  12. Mix until you get a batter that is not too thick and not too runny. If it is too runny, you can stir in some more Rice Flour.
  13. Add some Salt.
  14. Add some Turmeric Powder.
  15. Give this batter a stir using your hands.
  16. Now roll the filling into balls using your hands making sure to rub some Water on your hands each time so that the filling doesn't stick.
  17. Dip each of the Godapara in the batter.
  18. Deep fry until it is a golden color.
