Thambun Hodi, also known as Sarakku Hoda, is an herbal remedy that is made from Tamarind Seeds and is often eaten when a person is sick or to improve health. Nowadays, it is known as Rasam. In Sinhala, Sarakku is another name for the spices that we add to this Sarakku Hoda.

When our ancestors made this Sarakku Hoda in olden times, they would first lightly fry the ingredients such as Garlic, Curry Leaves, Ginger, and Pandan Leaves. Then they would place these ingredients in a mortar and pestle and grind it into a paste and then add it. They would make this Thambun Hodda at least twice a week for health.

Traditionally in Sri Lanka, when a mother gives birth, she is given this Thambun Hoda for 3 to 5 days. This Sarakku Hoda is also used as a remedy for detoxifying the body and boosting immunity. When a person had a fever, they often be unable to eat therefore they would be served a special white rice that is overcooked and then this Thambun Hodda would be poured over the rice and mix thoroughly.
