2 ways to use Fish Eggs - Malu Bithara Curry and Omelette

Fish Eggs, known as Malu Bithara in Sri Lanka, are rich in Omega 3 Fatty acids which are essential for brain and heart health and it helps reduce inflammation in the body. Another important benefit of Fish Eggs is that it provides Vitamin B12 which helps the body absorb energy from foods. In this recipe, we show you 2 ways of using Fish Eggs to make a Malu Bithara Curry and Malu Bithara Omelette.

Regular Fish Eggs (or Roe) is not the same as Caviar. Caviar, while it is still Fish Eggs, comes only from the Fish known as Sturgeon and it is combined with Salt to create an expensive delicacy.

Ingredients

Malu Bithara Curry

  • 250g of Malu Bithara
  • 100g of boiled Chickpeas
  • Sliced Onion
  • Sliced Green Chili
  • Curry Leaves
  • Diced Carrot
  • Piece of Lemongrass
  • 4 crushed Garlic Cloves
  • Piece of Pandan Leaf
  • Goraka or Tomato
  • 1 tsp of Pepper
  • Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tsp of toasted Fenugreek Seeds
  • Coconut Milk
  • Boiled Potatoes
  • 1 tsp of Roasted Curry Powder
  • Half a teaspoon of Chili Powder
  • Salt

Malu Bithara Omelette

  • 250g of Malu Bithara
  • 4 Eggs
  • 1.5 diced Tomatoes
  • 2 chopped Onions
  • Curry Leaves
  • 2 sliced Green Chilies
  • Salt
  • 1 tbsp of Chili Flakes
  • 1 tsp of Pepper

Instructions

Malu Bithara Curry

  1. Wash 250g of Malu Bithara and then steam it.
  2. After steaming, cut the Malu Bithara into slices.
  3. Add 100g of boiled Chickpeas into a pot.
  4. Add a sliced Onion.
  5. Add a sliced Green Chili.
  6. Add some Curry Leaves.
  7. Add a diced Carrot.
  8. Add a piece of Lemongrass.
  9. Add 4 crushed Garlic Cloves.
  10. Add a piece of Pandan Leaf.
  11. Add some Goraka or Tomato.
  12. Add 1 tsp of Pepper.
  13. Add some Turmeric Powder.
  14. Add 1 tsp of toasted Fenugreek Seeds.
  15. Add Salt to taste.
  16. Add Coconut Milk until everything is covered.
  17. Give this mixture a stir.
  18. Cook over medium heat and stir occasionally.
  19. After about 10 minutes of cooking, turn the heat down to low.
  20. Add some boiled Potatoes that are cut into small pieces.
  21. Add the Malu Bithara.
  22. Give this curry a stir and cook for 1 more minute.
  23. Add 1 tsp of Roasted Curry Powder and give this curry a stir.
  24. Add half a teaspoon of Chili Powder.
  25. Give this curry a stir and cook for 1 more minute.

Malu Bithara Omelette

  1. Wash 250g of Malu Bithara and then steam it.
  2. After steaming, cut the Malu Bithara into smaller pieces.
  3. Add 4 Eggs into a bowl.
  4. Add 1.5 diced Tomatoes.
  5. Add 2 chopped Onions.
  6. Add some Curry Leaves.
  7. Add 2 sliced Green Chilies.
  8. Add Salt to taste.
  9. Add 1 tbsp of Chili Flakes.
  10. Add 1 tsp of Pepper.
  11. Whisk this mixture together.
  12. Heat some Oil in a saucepan over medium heat.
  13. Ladle half of the Egg mixture into the saucepan.
  14. Add the Malu Bithara on top.
  15. Now ladle the remaining half of the Egg mixture on top.
  16. Cook both sides.
  17. Remove from saucepan and cut into wedges.
